By Augustine Mumbere,
A section of local leaders from Hamukungu parish in lake-Katwe sub-county in Kasese district has appealed to Uganda Wild Authority to consider compensation of farmers whose crops are damaged by wild animals.
President Museveni assented to the wildlife Act 2019, where compensation will be given to a person who suffers bodily injury, killed or properties destroyed by the wild beasts outside the protected area, but the law seems nor working to farmers neighboring the Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Mr. Sulaiman Ndyanabo, the secretary for defense in Hamukungu B Village, said that if UWA compensates the affected persons after the legal representative submits a claim to wildlife compensation verification committee, this would reduce friction between the farmers and UWA. Mr. Ndyanabo speaking…..
Hon. Lucy Kajolome, the female councilor for Hamukungu parish, said the area is overwhelmed with orphans as a result of wild animals, therefore leading to child headed families who only survive on Gods mercy.Hon. Kajolome speaking…..
Mr. Wilson Asiimwe, the area local council three chairperson, they have submitted a petition to UWA about the delayed compensation, but in vain.
Asiimwe said that failure by government to fully operationalize the law means, it has less commitment to compensate persons that are affected by the wildlife animals. END.
