Three people from the family of motorsport enthusiast Hassan Alwi, and another yet to be identified are feared dead, after drowning in River Nile last evening. Alwi is the director of the International University of East Africa.

According to Martin Okidi, a boat captain at the source of the Nile, the four members of the same family who included two adults and two minors had gone for a boat ride with a tour guide but when their boat engine reportedly developed a mechanical fault on their way to the Source of the Nile, they should have been drifted with the fast-flowing waters towards Kiira Power Station.

The tour guide was rescued by the Uganda peoples Defence Force- UPDF marine, while the family was washed away through the spillways. Ahmed Hasunira, the Jinja District Police Commander confirms that the security manager of Eskom called Nalufenya police reporting the drowning of people at Kiira dam at around 5:30 p.m. yesterday and that Jafalu Alwi, 12, and Okidi Patrick, 39 had been rescued and were undergoing treatment at the Nile International Hospital in Jinja.
