Residents of Nyamasa Parish in Bwikara Sub-county, Kagadi District, were left in shock yesterday after poachers reportedly killed a female chimpanzee, prompting a swift response from the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
According to Kuteesa Swelley Kadoma, Director of Friends of Chimpanzee Family Organization, the suspected hunters, believed to be from Kitehe village, tracked and killed the chimpanzee in Katyaboona Forest, Muhorro Town Council.
He said the animal was at a reproductive stage and was likely searching for a mating partner. Mr. Swalleh speaking……..
During the operation, two hunting dogs allegedly used in the incident were shot dead, while the suspected hunters fled the scene. Mr. Julius Biryabagaruka, a Conservation Education Officer at UWA, described the killing of protected wildlife as a serious criminal offense punishable by law. END
