In a related development, there was a standoff at the Mbarara City Central Police Station today after lawyers and relatives of detained National Unity Platform supporters were denied access to the suspects.

The group, which arrived at the station at around 8:00 a.m., was stopped at the main gate by about seven police officers manning the entrance, resulting into exchange of words between the officers and the lawyers, who demanded to see their clients, according to the NUP’s lawyer. The arrests in question stem from an operation conducted last Friday when police and UPDF personnel intercepted a convoy of NUP supporters travelling to a campaign rally for presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi in Bwizibwera, Mbarara District.
In a statement released that evening, police confirmed the arrest of several individuals, claiming the swoop targeted persons with criminal backgrounds, including those accused of assaulting officers, damaging government property, and obstructing law enforcement. END
