By Barbra Muhindo,
Rev. Jerald Kule Mutendaji, the manager for liturgical Centre in South Rwenzori diocese, has called for scientific research aimed at discovering the possible effects by copper and cobalt residues on the eco-systems in Kasese district.
Addressing a press conference at Verina gardens in Kasese Municipality yesterday, Rev. Mutendaji says since the sixties when mining activities active in the district, the region has experienced a notable rise in cancer cases especially among communities that depend on aquatic ecosystems for fish, food crops and domestic water, increasing suspicions that this could be as a result of cooper contaminated waters.
Rev. Mutendaji who has petitioned Rt. Hon. Anita Among, the Speaker of Parliament, thinks a coordinated scientific research over the matter by the ministry of health, minerals, water and environment, would ease plans for a confirmation, solution and scientifically guided interventions for the good of the community.
