At least nine serving cabinet ministers have lost their parliamentary seats following Uganda’s general presidential and parliamentary elections held nationwide on Thursday, January 15, 2026, in what political analysts describe as a clear indication of a growing voter appetite for political change and accountability.
Among the most high-profile casualties is the Minister of State for Trade, David Bahati, who lost the Ndorwa West parliamentary seat, bringing to an end nearly two decades of dominance in the constituency.
In Lira City, the Woman Member of Parliament who is the Minister of Gender, Labor and Social Development, Betty Amongi, who contested on the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) ticket, was defeated by Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng. Aceng polled 38,000 votes against Amongi’s 26,199. Amongi had shifted from Oyam County to Lira City to challenge Aceng, a move that many believed would work in her favor given the Lango sub-region’s traditional support for UPC. End
