By Editorial,
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced plans to honor the late journalist Risdel Kasasira by compiling his stories about Somalia into a book detailing the Army’s operations in the region since 2007.
Kasasira, a long-serving journalist with the Daily Monitor, died in a tragic traffic accident last Friday in Lyantonde District.
He was among the few journalists who extensively covered the UPDF’s deployment under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and its transition to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia.
In 2017, Kasasira authored a series of articles analyzing the successes and challenges of the UPDF’s decade-long deployment in Somalia.
Speaking at Kasasira’s burial in Rubaya Village, Kashari Sub-county, Mbarara District, Col Allan Kitanda noted that the UPDF recognized Kasasira’s contributions to journalism and the military, even likening him to a Corporal for his dedication.
The UPDF plans to collaborate with journalists who were on the frontlines in Somalia to document the Army’s experiences. End.
