The fees being charged by Police for retraining private security guards is proving to be prohibitive for security companies and is likely to affect the implementation of the retraining programme.
The Police director of operations, John Nuwagira, on August 17 this year issued a directive to private companies to have their guards retrained in phases starting with September.
The four phased retraining, according to Nuwagira, will be the basis for renewing operating licenses of the private security companies.
The retraining means that all the more than 250 private companies would be retraining a significant number of their guards every month and ensure by December 31 all their personnel have completed a refresher course, with each footing 20000= per day for meals.
Grace Matsiko, the chairperson of The Uganda Private Security Association, said much as they were part and parcel of the process that developed the curriculum for retraining, the huge cost attached will affect their services to their clients since they will have to hike the charges.

Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, said engagements about the challenges are ongoing between the private security sector players and the director of operations AIGP Nuwagira. But Enanga did not divulge details.END.
