Mr. Stephen Katesigwa, the coordinator for Uganda-DR Congo fishermen unit on Lakes George and Edward has called for lawful fishing between the two countries if the lakes were to remain productive.
Addressing the local community, most of them fishermen and representatives of the fishing community during the handover of fishing gears confiscated from illegal fishermen during a function at Katwe-Kabatooro town council yesterday, Mr. Stephen asked fishermen to abide by the law or else the water bodies may be less productive and also turn into deadly spaces for lawlessness by individuals and groups forcing their subversive agenda. Hatim Mbaziira, the overall commander for the fisheries law enforcement unit along lakes George and Edward said the peaceful meeting was convened mainly to hand over the 14 suspects of illegal fishing from the DR Congo, as well as boat engines, boats and fuel tanks among other fishing gears. Joe Walunsimbi, the Kasese Resident District Commissioner reminded fishermen in Uganda and DR Congo that the two counties were members of the East African Community thus, they should operate in a manner that will preserve good working relationship for the peace of the region.
