Justin Trudeau, Canada’s Prime Minister for nearly a decade, announced his resignation as leader of the governing Liberal Party during a news conference in Ottawa yesterday.
He confirmed he will remain in office as Prime Minister until a successor is chosen.
He also announced that parliament will be prorogued until March 24, giving the Liberal Party time to select a new leader ahead of the next election.
Mr. Trudeau, first elected as prime minister in 2015, has faced challenges in recent years, including declining approval ratings and criticism over his government’s handling of economic and social issues. END
