A section of traders in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha town council have decried the increased taxes levied on them when they carry business on the side of DR. Congo.
Speaking to the Kasese deputy RDC in charge of Bukonzo County, Lt. Maate Magwara in a meeting of key traders’ leaders yesterday held at Mpondwe border post, Ms Mary Birungi and Ms Medias Kibingo the dealers in Bitenge clothes and rice respectively revealed that the high taxes levied on their businesses lands them into losses looking at what they charge per item. According to Ms Kipako Margret Biira stressed that the high taxes imposed on them has made them to continue using porous border to escape high taxes.
Responding to the concerns, Mr. Alfred Ocen the in-charge customs law enforcement for Mpondwe customs revealed that taxes are decided by the Ministry of finance adding that as Uganda Revenue Authority can’t reverse the ministry’s decision. Mr. Ocen speaking……..
Earlier in his remarks, Lt. Maate Magwara the Deputy RDC in charge of Bukonzo County had warned local traders against using illegal routes as their carrying on business with their counterparts in DR. Congo id they are to avoid friction. END
