Police used teargas yesterday afternoon(02nd September 2020) to disperse supporters of mayoral aspirant Joseph Mayanja who had gathered in crowds to witness the opening of his offices on Balintuma Road, Kampala.
Mayanja, also known as Jose Chameleon, arrived at the scene at midday. But the police had already cordoned off the place and ordered for the cancellation of the event.
However, Chameleon disregarded the directive and decided to continue with the day’s activities as planned.
Police, however, took over the place and ordered all occupants to vacate the offices after he flouted the Ministry of Health guidelines for the control of COVID-19 transmissions, while organizing the event.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, Chameleon’s supporters provoked the police by pelting stones at the officers on duty, while chameleon and other leaders within his campaign team continued with the meeting against police orders.
The situation got out of hand when Chameleon attempted to block the police operation, prompting them to use teargas to calm the situation. One of Chameleon’s campaign Managers Kaspert Kasule told journalists that they had invited less than 100 people, and they had enough space to host them without flouting the Ministry of Health guidelines.Mr.Kasule;..
