The President of the Republic of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli is dead.
Vice President, Samia
Suluhu Hassan in a televised message to the country announced Magufuli’s death
last night.
Hassan said Magufuli who has been at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute since
March 6th died of heart complications at Mzena Hospital.
The government has said more information will be delivered to the nation though speculation had been rife that Magufuli had been infected with the Coronavirus.
Since over a week ago, there has been reports that Magufuli was not responding well while in Nairobi, Kenya for treatment, and was later flown back to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Several opposition members have been asking the whereabouts of Magufuli 61 who since the pandemic was declared in March 2020, he had downplayed the severity of the virus and only recently asked the general public to be more careful.
According to Tanzania’s constitution, Ms Hassan will be sworn in as the new president and should serve the remainder of Magufuli’s five-year team which he began last year.
Last July, another former President of Tanzania Benjamin Mkapa, also died in hospital in Dar es Salaam Hospital where he had been admitted for an undisclosed illness. END
