    Support empowerment of the deaf – Gender Minister

    The Minister of State for Gender, Labor and Social Development in charge of Disability Affairs, Hon. Helen Asamo, has called on MPs to support the education and sports ministry to staff schools with sign language interpreters.

    She was presenting a statement on the International Deaf Awareness Week that commences today during plenary sitting chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa on Thursday last week.

    This year’s event will run from today to 23 September 2022 with the main celebration in Iganga municipality, Eastern Uganda on the final day.

    In Kasese, the district coordinator for national Union Of women with Disability, Ms Annette Babirye called on the community to be helpful of the people with hearing inability especially during crisis, including infectious diseases, climate change, natural disasters, and armed conflicts.

    The programs officer at Karambi Group of People with Disabilities, in Karambi Sub County, Mr. Godfrey Bwambale says the week will be celebrated to sensitize the community about the need for a deliberate move by parents to have their deaf children in school so as to break the communication burrier in future in a number of institutions, including health facilities.     This year’s week will be celebrated under the theme “Building Inclusive Communities for all”. END.
