South African troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo have suffered their first fatalities since their recent deployment to quell a rebellion.
In a statement, the South African Army said the “details of this incident were still sketchy but two soldiers had been killed and three injured after a mortar bomb landed in their base yesterday.
The troops are part of a regional force helping DR Congo’s military as it confronts a series of armed groups.
Meanwhile, Kenya’s former multiple world record holder, Henry Rono, has died at the age of 72.
The athlete succumbed to a short illness this morning at a hospital in the capital, Nairobi.
In a related development, tributes are pouring in for veteran Sudanese journalist Mahjoub Mohamed Salih, who has died at the age of 95 in the capital of Egypt, Cairo today.
