Mr. Isaya Baluku Katya, the Executive Director for Young Agro Green Africa Network [YAGANET], has asked the local residents living on the slopes of Rwenzori Mountains to embrace tracing as viable means to tame the destructive running waters during the rainy seasons.
During a half day disaster advocacy meeting at the Kasese district headquarters for civil society organizations funded by Oxfam, Mr. Baluku partly blamed land and mudslides in the region to human activities, including failure by the locals to mulch and dig terraces, thereby losing fertile soils and crops. Mr. Mustafa Kikusa, the Principal Assistant Secretary for the Kasese District Chief Administrative Officer who doubles as the Chairperson of the Kasese District Disaster Management Committee, called for the revival and practical interventions by the sub-county environmental committees for the good of the community. Ms Jovia Kabugho, Executive Director for Alliance for Children and Youth-Uganda, the organizer of the gathering had earlier observed the need to sensitize the locals about the importance of water harvesting during the wet season.
