Rev. Fr. Isebayanda Baluku John has made history by becoming the first Catholic priest from the Diocese of Kasese to undertake a pilgrimage on foot to the Namugongo Martyrs’ Shrines.
Speaking to our reporter shortly after arriving at Our Lady of Assumption Kasese Cathedral Parish from St. John’s Seminary this afternoon, Fr. Isebayanda said the journey is a fulfillment of his long-time dream to trek from the Diocese of Kasese to Namugongo. He added that he is offering the pilgrimage in prayer for the Diocese and for all believers in Christ.

Among the pilgrims is Sr. Leonia Kyakimwa, a 61-year-old woman from Kasanga Commisium, who testified that this marks her 14th year of walking to Namugongo.
She revealed that this year, she is praying especially for the Diocese of Kasese to lead the animation of Uganda Martyrs Day in 2026.
Ms. Marie Immaculate Kahambu, from the Butembo-Beni Catholic Diocese in the Democratic Republic of Congo, joined the faithful at Our Lady of Assumption Kasese Cathedral. She shared that their intention in making the pilgrimage is to pray for lasting peace in eastern D.R. Congo.

The group of pilgrims is setting off today for Namugongo ahead of Uganda Martyrs Day, which will be commemorated on June 3rd, 2025.
