Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has died after suffering a cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment in India. He was 80.
According to Indian police and local media reports, Odinga collapsed this morning during a walk at an Ayurvedic treatment facility in Koothattukulam, Ernakulam District, Kerala State.
He had reportedly arrived in India earlier this week to receive traditional Ayurvedic therapy.
A spokesperson for the Ayurvedic eye hospital said Odinga was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at around 9:52 a.m. local time. His body is currently being kept at the hospital as police complete the necessary formalities. Odinga, a long-time opposition leader and one of Kenya’s most influential political figures, served as Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013 under a power-sharing agreement following the country’s disputed 2007 elections.END
