Dr. Saeed Kordo, a Physician and Consultant Clinical Microbiologist from Southampton University-England has warned the public against self-medication.
Self-medication, according to health experts, is the practice of obtaining drugs without a Prescription from a doctor/ qualified health practioner.
Speaking to Kasese Guide Radio shortly after a one day training of health workers in Kasese district on Antimicrobial Resistance among Rural communities in Kasese district, held at Central division council hall in Kasese Municipality today, Dr.Kordo said this practice is contributing to rising Antibiotic resistance and it introduces unavoidable risks which may include death or producing a child with birth defects.
Dr. Kordo said that approximately 4.9 million people die globally due to misuse of Antimicrobial resistance. (Misuse of drugs).

The risk with self-medication is that many are treating wrong diseases because they didn’t undergo laboratory required tests to determine the actual illnesses.
Mr. Arafat Bwambale, the Kasese District Health surveillance officer, concurred with Dr.Kordo noting that some people have gone ahead procuring drugs and kept them in homes which he said puts their lives on danger Mr. Arafat speaking…
