The Kasese district National Resistance Movement chairman, Dr Crispus Kiyonga has called for double and collaborated efforts that would see soils protected for future use.
Dr. Kiyonga, a famous farmer in the Rwenzori region was concerned that the mountainous areas were hit by almost all categories of soil erosion, a situation he said was likely to fuel food insecurity.
Addressing farmers during the international coffee celebration day held at Agrivolve Uganda ltd premises in Kisinga town council in Kasese district over the weekend, Dr Kiyonga asked farmers to terrace and mulch their gardens or else, the fertile soil that their crops rely on for fertilizers, will be lost. The coffee farmers talked described Agrivolve establishment as a key intervention that has added value to coffee, as well as guiding them on the best practices of harvesting and storing coffee to attract demand.
The Kasese district Vice chairman, Mr. Hamu Natuhwera said they were lobbying government for more resources to fund the establishment of more mini-irrigation schemes to curb food insecurity and improve the household incomes of the locals. END
