Renowned historian and researcher, Professor Derek Peterson has asked the Uganda government to consider freeing ailing Rwenzururu king Charles Wesley Mumbere.
Professor Peterson from the University of Michigan who has done extensive research on Uganda’s history, said that despite the differences today, Mumbere and his people contributed towards the liberation of
Uganda from the Idi Amin regime.
Professor Peterson was yesterday delivering a keynoteaddress at the ongoing International Humanities Conference at MakerereUniversity.
His lecture under the theme “Media and Revolution in Idi Amin’s
Uganda” focused on how the people of Rwenzururu used modest, slow media toorganize their resistance against Amin’s dictatorship.
Professor Peterson said that there is little literatureabout the Banyarwenzururu in the history of Ugandan especially the role they played
in the ousting of Idi Amin in 1979.
He says the government should releaseMumbere from the ongoing house arrest so that he can get treatment and have hisfreedom back.
