Police in Fort Portal are having in custody one of their own who has been arrested over the puzzling death of a suspect.
According to the Rwenzori West regional police spokesperson, ASP Vincent Twesige, Detective Assistant Inspector of Police Charles Chuma has been arrested after the death of a suspect, Patrick Mugume, whom he had been ordered to take to Fort Portal regional referral hospital but died under unclear circumstances.
ASP Twesige says that the deceased was a victim of an intelligence-led operation to arrest suspected criminals who commit different offences at night and hide in entertainment places like video halls during daytime.
He says that when the Officer in Charge of Fort Portal Police Station, ASP Emma Lorika was at the scene of crime, they received information from the unit major Sgt Mugisha that one of the suspects, Patrick Mugume had fainted and needed urgent help, forcing the officers to dispatch a police pickup for the same.
Ms Joyce Kobugabe, the mother of the deceased narrates that amidst all this, police officers were simply tossing her up and down by not telling her the exact location of her son, something that she is condemning.
Ms Kobugabe speaking……
Mr. Mwesige Kaija, the deceased`s uncle said that they had never heard any case of theft connected to the late Mugume and that as a family, they are going to do everything possible to ensure they get justice because the explanation from police is unsatisfactory and raises many questions.
Mr. Mwesige speaking……
May the soul of the deceased rest in peace. END
