The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has restrained the House from debating the continued detention of the Rwenzururu Kingdom royal guards for fear of prejudicing the case.
This follows a petition to the House raised by the Bukonzo County West legislators Atkins Godfrey Katusabe during plenary sitting yesterday that several of the detainees who were arrested by the Government in 2016 six years ago including the King, have not been subjected to fair trial.
More than 200 royal guards were arrested by security after they clashed with forces but 11 were released on bail a year later in 2017, and 143 in January 2021.
Hon. Katusabe voiced his frustrations over their continued incarceration and accused the security personnel of reportedly torturing the suspects whose health has since deteriorated and requiring urgent medical attention.
However, Jackson Kafuuzi, the Deputy Attorney General accounted for the detainees saying there is a solid case against them, dismissing claims of torture and mistreatment and affirmed that the prisoners are fed well.
In his response, the Deputy Speaker told the lawmakers that it is tricky for Parliament to debate the merits of the case at full scale, citing the sub-judice rule. END
