Makindye West Member of Parliament, Hon. Allan Ssewanyana has openly defied the National Unity Platform decision to drop him from the party ticket for the 2026 parliamentary elections, insisting that he remains the rightful flag bearer and the most popular choice for the constituency.
The NUP Election Management Committee recently endorsed Ms Zahara Luyirika as the party’s flag bearer for Makindye West, citing her stronger appeal on the ground.
The decision has, however, ignited a storm within the party, with Hon. Ssewanyana accusing the leadership of betrayal and political manipulation. Addressing his supporters in Nsambya yesterday, Hon. Ssewanyana questioned the rationale behind the party’s decision to hand the ticket to a candidate who had not even expressed interest in representing Makindye West but Kampala Woman MP seat against incumbent Shamim Malende.
