President Yoweri Museveni has said that he will meet elders in the fishing communities following allegations of extortion by the Fisheries Protection Unit.
The President’s move comes after an outcry from leaders in the Lango region.
In a statement read to the President on Tuesday at Atabu Primary School by the Dokolo South MP, Felix Okot Ogong, said that the operations conducted by the soldiers in the lakes are mainly meant to collect cash from the already vulnerable community.

In his response, Museveni who was campaigning for the NRM flag bearer in the Dokolo District Woman MP by-election said that he will meet with the elders in the fishing communities to guide the protection of the lakes and end illegal fishing before the soldiers are removed.
He said that the lakes have been invaded by foreigners who carry out indiscriminate fishing without any regard for the growth and development of the fishing industry. Mr. Museveni speaking…
In 2017, President Museveni created the Fisheries protection unit, as a branch of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces-UPDF, which he accordingly deployed to combat illegal fishing practices in a bid to reawaken the economic viability of the fisheries sector. END.
