A mini-survey by Kasese Guide Radio indicates that teachers in primary school in Kasese district have resumed duty in high gears but with low turn up of learners.

This third academic term did not open in most government aided primary schools following an industrial action by teachers over low pay and salary discrepancies by the government of Uganda.
Mr. Emmy Kayiri, the Kasese Municipal Education Officer, said many institutions including but not limited to Kasese SDA, Kirembe, Mulongoti and Basecamp Primary schools, had almost all their teachers present but with low turn up leaners. Mr. Kayiri speaking………

At Ibanda primary school in Ibanda-Kyanya town council in Kasese district, the head teacher, Mr. Godfrey Baluku Basona said only 335 of 976 learners had reported yesterday possibly because some were still doubting if teachers were serious with the temporary suspension of their industrial action as announced on Thursday last week. Mr. Erisa Muhindo, the head teacher for Basecamp primary school who also doubles as the chairperson for the association of primary head teachers in Kasese municipality, commended the teachers for their positive response to UNATU’s call to resume duty as their demands are looked into by government. According to the Community Development Officer for Maliba subcounty, Ms Ruth Labongo, who was touring schools yesterday, messages of hope need to be popularized among learners, some of whom had been diverted by what she described by the long holiday that was prolonged by the teachers’ strike. END
