The Kisoro District Security Committee has temporarily closed the Uganda-Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC border at Bunagana.
The Kisoro Resident District Commissioner, Hajji Shafique Ssekandi said the decision last evening followed the attack by the M23 rebels who reportedly overran the border on the Democratic Republic of Congo side.
Its said before the border closure, the M23 rebels addressed some of the locals and advised them to remain in Uganda, saying they want to first sort out their enemies, the Congolese government troops in the area.
The RDC said since all immigration and customs offices on the Congolese side are none operational after the workers have fled, no trucks are allowed to crossover. Mr. Sekandi speaking1……..
Mr. Ssekandi revealed that 174 Congolese security officers including 137 soldiers and 37 police officers who fled to Uganda after being overrun by the suspected rebels will be handed over to their country’s authorities at a later stage when all necessary procedures are complete. Media reports have quoted Congolese army and government as accusing Rwanda for allegedly supporting the M23, a charge Kigali has vehemently denied. END
