Kilembe Mines hospital has refuted reports that eight bodies were swept away in the hospital mortuary but that one patient died during the planned evacuation process by the devastated by floods from river Nyamwamba.
The hospital was ruined when river Nyamwamba burst its banks resulting in floods that washed away medicines and other essential equipment on Thursday. As a result, the authorities resolved to evacuate all 87 patients who were found at Kilembe Hospital at the time of the tragedy.
But the hospital administrator Onesmus Kibaya confirmed to URN on Friday morning that one patient, who was on oxygen, died before he was evacuated. Kibaya says that the heavy floods disrupted electricity supply causing a breakdown of the oxygen supply at the hospital, yer the bad roads also slowed down the evacuation.
Four patients were on oxygen at the time of the floods.
