Members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Kasese District have criticized Members of Parliament from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) for passing the controversial Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Amendment Bill, 2025.
Yesterday, NRM legislators pushed through the bill, which reintroduces the trial of civilians in military courts an act the opposition deems unconstitutional.
Opposition MPs strongly opposed the bill, storming out of Parliament in protest. They also demanded the repeal of provisions that allow for such prosecutions.
The opposition expressed concerns over proposed amendments to the Political Parties and Organizations Act. The changes would condition government funding for political parties on their participation in the Inter-Party Organization for Dialogue (IPOD), a move critics say undermines political independence.
