By Josephine Nyamicu,
Kasese Municipal leadership in collaboration with the district disaster Management Committee will soon hold a special meeting with residents leaving along River Nyamwamba Valley who have reportedly encroached on the water channel.
Speaking to Kasese Guide Radio this morning at his office in Kasese town, Mr. Chance Kahindo, the Kasese Municipal Mayor reasoned that human activities had continued to destroy the river bed and banks resulting in flooding.
He said a spot survey will be done along Kamulikwizi water channel and River Nyamwamba banks identifying the locals who have constructed along the bank, therefore leading to flooding in Kamulikwizi and Kanyangeya wards among others. Mr. Chance speaking….
Previously, both the municipal authorities and district authorities ordered people leaving near the banks of River Nyamwamba to vacate with immediate effect following a wave of floods that washed away Kilembe Mines Hospital and destroyed several villages across the district. In 2013, Kasese municipal council passed a resolution to evict all the sand miners along the river banks, but to date, this resolution has never been implemented, following confrontation and intimidation of the law enforcement officers by the local community.
