The Kawempe North by-election today reportedly degenerated into seemingly choreographed attacks on journalists covering the polls to replace the late area member of parliament, Muhammad Ssegirinya, who passed in January this year.
Hasifah Nanvuma from Nation Media Group, Hassan Wasswa and Francis Ijjo, both from NBS TV were assaulted and injured, the latter two needing hospitalization to treat their injuries.
The trio bring to seven the number of journalists assaulted by alleged security operatives while covering this by-election.
Meanwhile, heavy security deployments across Kawempe Division reportedly kept many voters indoors, with tensions escalating throughout the day.
According to the media, several residents were observed peeping through windows and doors to observe the situation, as one Ms Shakira Nambi, a resident of Tula, was seen closing her salon over fears on Tula Road. END
