Nebbi Catholic Diocese has embarked on a massive fundraising drive to raise 1.3 billion Shillings to animate the 2024 Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations.
The annual celebrations held on June 3rd at Namugongo Martyrs shrine in Kampala commemorate 45 martyrs both Catholic and Anglican, who were killed between 1885 and 1887 on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II, the then King of Buganda.
Catherine Akumu Mavenjina, the chairperson of the central organizing committee and also the Member of Parliament representing older persons in Northern Uganda, explains that they intend to mobilize the funds majorly through Christians from the parishes and the sub-parishes within the diocese.
Mavenjina further noted that the parishes have been grouped into three categories depending on the number of Christians and are expected to contribute between 15 to 5 million Shillings towards supporting the Martyrs Day celebrations. Hon. Muvanjina speaking…
According to the diocesan organizing committee, the theme of next year’s celebrations is “But as for me, and my household we shall serve the Lord”, taken from the book of Joshua chapter 24 verse15.
Next year’s celebrations will be the first time for the Bishop Ordinary of Nebbi Catholic Diocese, Rev. Raphael P’Mony Wokorach to be the main celebrant at the Martyrs Day mass following his appointment as Bishop by, Pope Francis on March 31, 2021.END.
