The Human Rights Network for Journalists has stepped in to replace equipment damaged during an assault involving bodyguards of National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi.
The incident occurred on May 18 while journalists were covering the burial of the late Pascal Ssekasamba, younger brother of former Bukoto South MP Matia Nsubuga, at Manja Village in Kiseka Subcounty, Lwengo District.
The NUP bodyguards were accused of attacking journalists, resulting in significant damage and theft.
Next Media’s Zainab Namusaazi Ssengendo’s camera, valued at 1.5 million shillings, was destroyed in the altercation, while Radio Simba’s Margaret Kayondo’s phone, worth 800,000 shillings, was stolen.
Both journalists faced substantial challenges since the incident, struggling to perform their duties effectively without their essential equipment.
Ms Kayondo echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of reliable equipment to meet the expectations of their employers and the demands of their profession.
Robert Ssempala, the executive director of HRNJ, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to seeking justice for the affected journalists. END.
