HIV positive mothers are accusing medical personnel of discrimination and invading their right to privacy. According to Martha Kansiime, a nurse at Mulago national referral hospital, all expectant mothers must test for HIV before they are attended to for antenatal sessions, but the right to privacy of patients HIV results must be respected. This contravenes the HIV and AIDS prevention and control Act, of 2015 that stipulates HIV testing should be voluntary.
But 33- year old Patience Atim, a mother of two says who says that upon reaching Kawempe health IV, she was forced to have an HIV test but after the nurses knowing her HIV status, she faced discrimination during subsequent antenatal visits and paid highly for mother gloves, cotton wool and other medical materials used by nurses when giving birth to her baby.
