The High Court in Kampala has nullified the election of opposition politician Elias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola as Member of Parliament for Kawempe North, citing serious electoral irregularities.
In a ruling delivered via email, Justice Bernard Namanya declared the March 13, 2025 by-election null and void and directed the Electoral Commission to organize a fresh poll.
Justice Namanya ruled that the election violated key provisions of the Parliamentary Elections Act and therefore could not be allowed to stand.
The court found that more than 16,600 voters including Ms Nambi Faridah Kigongo, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate were denied the opportunity to vote. Justice Namanya said this exclusion had a significant impact on the election outcome.
The judge also noted that Mr Nalukoola, a candidate of the National Unity Platform (NUP), violated election laws by campaigning on polling day at Mbogo Primary School Playground and Kazo Angola LCI Office. Such acts are prohibited under Section 100 of the Parliamentary Elections Act.
Nalukoola, told the Press this afternoon he has filed a formal Notice of appeal against today’s high court ruling. END.
