A section of political leaders from Mayuge District has asked Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) officers attached to the Fisheries Protection Unit to minimize operations along Lake Victoria to help consolidate the National Resistance Movement (NRM) support.
During their weekend meetings, the leaders said opposition politicians are exploiting loopholes within Fisheries Protection Unit operations to weaken the ruling party’s support in fishing communities.
They warned that if the operations are not reduced, NRM support could continue to decline, posing a threat to the party’s performance in next year’s general elections, Ali Malongo the LCIII Chairperson for Malongo Sub-county confirmed.
On her part, Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahirwa, the FPU Commandant, acknowledged that the unit’s image had initially been tainted by negative perceptions but said current commanders have improved relations with fishermen through dialogue instead of force. Lt. Col. Mercy speaking..
