The former Kasese Forum for Democratic Change party, Mr. Saulo Maate has commended the Supreme Court for what he called a landmark ruling against trying civilians in the Military General Court Martial.
Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that all charges, ongoing criminal trials, or pending trials, before the courts-martial involving civilians, must immediately cease and be transferred to the ordinary courts of law with competent jurisdiction.
The Court also ruled that the judgment shall have no retrospective effect on any conviction made, and sentences imposed, before the date of this judgment; save where the conviction and sentence are being challenged in Courts of law.
Addressing the media at Verina Gardens in Kasese Municipality yesterday, Mr. Saulo who praised the Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo for the ruling, said the decision by the Supreme Court was not only historical but a restoration of hope that the judiciary in Uganda in future would act professionally against politics of selfishness. He used the same platform to ask president Museveni to respect the judicial decision and the principle separating the powers among the executive, judiciary and the legislature. END
