By Barbra Muhindo,
Mr. Wilson Asiimwe, the Chairperson Local Council Three for Lake-Katwe Sub-county in Kasese District, has urged fishermen to seek alternative sources of livelihood instead of over-relying on fishing.
He made the remarks yesterday during a community sensitization meeting with various fishermen held at Katunguru landing site.
According to Mr. Asiimwe, the growing population along the lake shores, particularly at landing sites in Kasese, has led to an excessive number of people depending on the lake, which he warned could pose a serious threat to future generations.
He therefore encouraged residents especially those living near the lakes to participate in government initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and other development projects, to reduce overdependence on fishing. Mr. Asiimwe speaking…
Meanwhile, Mr. Ikaaba Mohammed, the Kasese District Internal Security Officer (DISO), warned fishermen against engaging in illegal fishing practices, noting that such activities are criminal.
His remarks come in the wake of an incident last month in which illegal fishing gear worth 400 million shillings was destroyed by the Fisheries Protection Unit at Katunguru Fishing landing site.
