Mr. Gerald Kesigwe, a trainer working with Green World International, a non-governmental organization based in Mbarara city calls for the use and promotion of organic fertilizers as means to produce less toxic harvests.
He said the application of chemical fertilizers on crops was a direct attack on lives he said can be saved by the use of naturally produced fertilizers that can be added to soil or plants, in order to provide nutrients to sustain growth.
Speaking to the media at Verina gardens in Kasese town shortly after a one- day agriculture seminar training today, Mr. Kesigwe said organic fertilizers that include among others, composted animal manure, compost, sewage sludge, food processing wastes, and municipal biosolids improve soil health and release nutrients to soils that the life risking chemical fertilizers. Mr. Philemon Thembo, the Organization coordinator in Kasese district had earlier asked farmers to produce mainly for the market than subsistence farming that adds no value to their farming activities. END
