Makerere University staff have welcomed President Yoweri Museveni’s decision to appoint former Finance Minister, Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga as the new Chancellor.
The appointment brings to an end nearly a year of uncertainty for Makerere, which had been without a Chancellor since Suruma’s departure.

Makerere Administrative Staff Association, and the National Union of Education Institutions, resolved to thank President Museveni for appointing his long-term ally Dr. Kiyonga, an exemplary and corruption free, to lead Uganda’s oldest institution.
They are optimistic that Dr. Kiyonga will boost the University’s reputation, before thanking Mrs. Lorna Magara and her council for recommending the medic turned politician.
Speaking to Kasese Guide Radio this morning, Dr. Robert Kakuru, Chairperson of Makerere University Academic Staff Association, said the Chancellor’s immediate interest should be in defending the Staff Appeals Tribunal, which he claims is under threat from university management. Dr. Kakuru speaking……
Dr. Kakuru also urged Kiyonga to expedite the appointment of individuals to key vacant positions at the university, which have been filled by acting personnel for an extended period. END
