The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has opposed an application by opposition leader Dr Kiiza Besigye and his co-accused, Hajji Obeid Lutale, to refer their ongoing treason case to the Constitutional Court, arguing that no genuine constitutional issue that has been raised.

Dismissing the application as a deliberate attempt to delay proceedings, Chief State Attorney Richard Birivumbuka submitted yesterday before High Court Criminal Division Judge Emmanuel Baguma, where the matter is being heard. Mr. Birivumbuka speaking……..
The defence, led by Counsel Ernest Kalibbala, had earlier filed an application seeking to halt the trial and refer the case to the Constitutional Court following Judge Baguma’s repeated refusals to step aside from hearing the matter, despite the complaint filed against him by Dr Besigye and Lutale alleging bias and incompetence. Dr Kiiza Besigye, Hajji Obeid Lutale, and Captain Denis Oola are facing treason charges for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government of Uganda. END
