The death toll from the Kigoogwa fuel tanker explosion has risen to 24.
The accident occurred in Kigoogwa Town on Tuesday when a fuel tanker, registration number UAM 292Q, traveling from Kampala to Gulu, overturned and caught fire in the town.
It’s reported that the victims were siphoning fuel from the leaking tank when it exploded and caught killing 11 people on spot and leaving others injured.
According to Assistant Inspector General of Police Dr. Moses Byaruhanga, the Director of Health Services in the Police Force, the number of people who died has now risen to 24.
The Uganda Police Forces yesterday handed over the remaining 11 bodies to the bereaved families at Mulago City Mortuary after DNA test results received and matched with the families but that there three feet of children whose families haven’t surfaced to support the DNA plans. Hon. Godfrey Kabyanga, the State Minister for National Guidance who represented the Premier, Rt. Hon. Robina Nabanja at the handover of the bodies, said government had handed over five million shillings to each of the bereaved families to help them in burial arrangements and that plans were on to extend support to the business persons who lost property in the fire as the search for driver of the fuel tanker is still ongoing.
