The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) has opened in Rwanda’s capital Kigali as leaders meet to discuss some of the challenges in the 54-member organization.
In a speech at the opening ceremony Prince Charles, who was representing Queen Elizabeth said it was up to member countries to choose between being a republic or a monarchy.
The Prince of Wales also called on the commonwealth to ensure a better future for the young people.
The outgoing Chair of the Commonwealth, also British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson said as the world comes out of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the threat of climate change still remains.
Rwandan President, Paul Kagame paid tribute to the head of the Commonwealth, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth for her devoted service to the Commonwealth. He said the Commonwealth has grown over the Queen’s over 70 years of service.END.
