There is heightened security in Soroti city as President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the former Forum for Democratic Change- FDC party president, Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye rally votes for their respective candidates ahead of the Soroti East parliamentary by-elections.
Besigye is campaigning for the FDC candidate, Moses Attan Okia in Opiyai and Aloet wards while President Museveni is campaigning for the NRM candidate, Herbert Edmund Ariko in Madera and Moruapesur wards.
Both leaders have several supporters trailing their campaigns. This has prompted the Police and the army to deploy in the city.
Since nominations, the police have kept a distance from the campaigns except for deployment at the Electoral Commission offices. Even when candidates campaign beyond the 6:00 pm deadline as gazzetted in the Electoral Commission guidelines, security forces have not interfered.
Capt. Mike Mukula, the NRM Vice Chairman for Eastern Uganda, says the security situation for the Soroti by- election has been calm and will remain the same throughout the election period.
