By Kyamanduma Patrick,
A section of elders in Busongora County North has appealed to the elites in Kasese district to be proud of their cultures by promoting local languages in their homes and at public, social and cultural events.
In a meeting held under the auspices of Kasese district council for older persons, expressed disappointment to observe that educated young men and women are encouraging their children right from infancy to speak only English at the expense of the mother tongue, expressing fear that if the trend continues for the next two decades, some local languages will have faced extinction.
They appealed to the district language board to come-up with reading materials and guidelines on how to conduct marriage and burial ceremonies, since the Baganda culture appears to be taking precedent especially at wedding ceremonies in Kasese district.
They also castigated sub-county community development officers for not calling sub-county council meetings for older persons which they said have led to most elders being ignorant about government programs like Parish Development Model, Special Enterprises Grant for Older persons.
The meeting which was held under the chairmanship of elder Bwambale Bamusedee also discussed the high suicide rates among the youths, inheritance of property and expensive weddings.
They therefore request the government to expedite the creation of more districts out of Kasese especially Busongora north district which the president granted in 2016. END
