Agriculture students from Mbarara University of Science and Technology-MUST have planted over 1000 trees, particularly bamboo, along the banks of River Rwizi.
This effort, executed during the 2nd Annual Agri-biotechnology Innovation exhibition, serves a dual purpose: safeguarding the river and mitigating environmental degradation.
Leticia Ahairigwe, the President of the Mbarara University Agriculture Students Association, highlighted the project’s objectives, saying that besides protecting the river and the environment, the initiative aims to educate city residents about the pivotal role of environmental preservation through tree planting.
Dr. Medard Twinamatsiko Katonera, the Director of the Centre for Innovation and Technology Transfer at the University, stressed the encroachment on River Rwizi by activities that have depleted its water levels. Dr. Katonera said given that a significant portion of Mbarara City relies on River Rwizi for water, urgent action is necessary due to declining water quality and levels. END
