An 84-year-old woman, identified as Sophia Ocidhi, collapsed and died yesterday while waiting for her monthly wage from the Social Assistance Grants for the Empowerment (SAGE) at a Centenary Bank pay point.
The incident took place at Pangyeth Parish Headquarters in Pangyeth Central Village, Pakwach District.
Ocidhi, a resident of Theyao Central Village, was brought to the pay point on a motorcycle by her grandson, Fred Akenda.
Akenda said in an interview that his grandmother had been unwell and that her condition worsened at the pay point, leading to her sudden collapse and death.
Robert Odia, the LC III Chairperson of Alwi Sub-County called for the creation of alternative payment avenues for SAGE beneficiaries, highlighting the challenges faced by the elderly who have to travel long distances, often battling health issues, to receive their wage.
Mr. Odia speaking…….
The SAGE program, launched in 2013, provides quarterly payments of 75,000 thousand shillings to elderly individuals aged 80 and above as part of the government’s effort to improve their well-being. END.
