Four hundred fifty-foot pilgrims have left Lira Diocese for the Uganda Martyr’s Shrine- Namugongo.
The pilgrims, among them, children between 10- 12 years and elders as old as 75 years of age set off from the Ordination Ground at Lira Cathedral yesterday morning and expect to arrive in Namugongo by Monday, May 30.
The pilgrims will make stopovers along the way for prayers, rest and exercise sessions.
The faithful spent last night at St. Mary’s Catholic parish Loro from where they will set off to their next resting place at Dima in Kiryandongo district.
This year’s foot pilgrimage follows the two-year lockdown triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw the government ban all kinds of public gatherings to stem infections.
Annually faithful from across the world gather at Namugongo Martyrs Shrine on June 6th to commemorate the 45 Catholic and Anglican martyrs, who were killed on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II, the then King of Buganda. End.
